Elder Anthimos lived from 1869-1960. After a pious childhood and some years on Mount Athos, he became most renowned on the island of Chios where he spent much time serving a leper colony and then founding a women's monastery named "Panaghia the Helper," after the miraculous icon he so greatly venerated during his life. Although far less known than many other Orthodox Elders of the 20th century (the book gave the impression that he is locally venerated to an amazing degree, however), "the Elder," as he was known, displayed many common qualities of Orthodox saints: great love, humility, a super-human asceticism, as well as clairvoyance and the gift of miraculous healing and the like.
