Saint Irenaeus was born in Smyrna around 130 AD. For unknown reasons, he settled in the south of France, where Lyon is today. After the death of Bishop Pothinus, he became the bishop of Lyon. Saint Irenaeus found martyrdom during persecution in 202 AD.
