Ο Όσιος Γεώργιος Καρσλίδης γεννήθηκε το 1901 μ.Χ. στην Αργυρούπολη του Πόντου (έδρα της Ιεράς Μητρόπολης Χαλδίας) και το βαφτιστικό του όνομα ήταν Αθανάσιος.
Έμεινε από μικρός ορφανός και μάλιστα οι γονείς του πέθαναν την ίδια ημέρα. Όμως, αμέσως φανερώθηκαν τα σημεία της κλήσεως και της χάριτος. Γαλουχημένος από την ευσεβέστατη μάμμη του με την παραδειγματική ποντιακή ευσέβεια, μόλις στάθηκε στα πόδια του και άρχισε να μιλάει έδειξε ότι διέφερε των άλλων παιδιών και ότι ήταν αφοσιωμένος στον Θεό.
