Είναι άγνωστος ο τόπος καταγωγής του Αγίου Αλεξάνδρου. Έζησε κατά τους χρόνους του αυτοκράτορα Κωνσταντίνου του Μεγάλου (306 – 337 μ.Χ.). Διαδέχθηκε τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο Αλεξανδρείας Αχιλλά και υπήρξε πνευματικός πατέρας του Μεγάλου Αθανασίου, του και διαδόχου αυτού στον αρχιεπισκοπικό θρόνο της Αλεξανδρινής Εκκλησίας. Στον αρχιεπισκοπικό θρόνο ανήλθε το 313 μ.Χ. και διακρινόταν για τη βαθιά θεολογική μόρφωση, την πραότητα του χαρακτήρος και τις λοιπές αρετές του. Όταν το 319 μ.Χ. ο Άρειος δίδαξε για πρώτη φορά την αίρεσή του, ο Άγιος Αλέξανδρος προσπάθησε πατρικά
