Το αρχιερατικό εγκόλπιο δεν θεωρείται άμφιο, αλλά έμβλημα του επισκοπικού βαθμού στην Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία. Καθιερώθηκε με Βασιλικό Διάταγμα το 1856.
Είναι εικόνισμα συνήθως ωοειδούς σχήματος που εικονίζει είτε τον Χριστό να ευλογεί και να κρατάει το Ευαγγέλιο, ή την Θεοτόκο (οπότε σε αυτή την περίπτωση το εγκόλπιο ονομάζεται και «Παναγία»). Το εγκόλπιο φέρεται με χρυσή αλυσίδα από το λαιμό του επισκόπου στο στήθος του πάντοτε είτε όταν ιερουργεί είτε όχι, στη θέα του οποίου τόσο οι ένστολοι όσο και οι φιλαρμονικιές (μπάντες) αποδίδουν τιμές στρατηγού.
