Ο Όσιος Παναγής ο Μπασιάς γεννήθηκε στο Ληξούρι της Κεφαλληνίας, το 1801 μ.Χ., και ήταν γιός ευσεβών και επιφανών γονέων, του Μιχαήλ Τυπάλδου — Μπασιά και της Ρεγγίνας Δελλαπόρτα. Έμαθε Ιταλικά, Γαλλικά, Λατινικά και καταρτίσθηκε στη φιλοσοφία και τη θεολογία.
