We will presume to approach briefly two great figures of the Greek tradition. The first was born and died in Ephesus in the sixth to fifth century BC. This is the ‘dark’ or obscure philosopher. The second was born in Evia and ended his life on the Holy Mountain in the twentieth century. This is the luminous elder. They are separated by such great distances in space and time, and they lived, both spiritu’ally and culturally, in such different climates; yet their unprecedented boldness in sacrificing everything-even from childhood – for the sake of the One, creates an affinity between them.
